Be the Thermostat: Changing the Culture, Not Reflecting It with Rasool Berry

What does it look like when the church becomes a thermostat rather than a thermometer? That question sits at the heart of a conversation that challenges us to examine whether we are simply reflecting the temperature of our polarized culture or actively working to change it. Drawing from the early church in Acts, we explore how the first believers created something radically countercultural in the midst of a deeply stratified Roman society. They did not ignore their differences in ethnicity, economics, or background. Instead, they allowed those very differences to become assets that pointed to something deeper and more true. Acts chapter 6 gives us a striking example of this in action, where those in positions of power deliberately empowered those on the margins to correct an injustice within the community. This is not just ancient history. It is a blueprint for how we are called to engage our world right now. The conversation also takes us into the story of Jonah and the challenge God places before him: to genuinely love a city he would rather see judged. Jeremiah 29 adds another layer, calling God's people not to withdraw from the places where they find themselves, but to seek the peace and prosperity of those places. The spiritual invitation here is to ask ourselves honestly whether we love our Nineveh, and whether our faith is producing in us a bigger, more generous vision for the world around us.
